Keep On Smiling
Tooth decay is caused by the exposure of teeth to acids created by bacteria feeding upon food particles remaining in the mouth. These bacteria and the harmful acids they manufacture are visible on the teeth in plaque, a sticky white substance. Effective plaque prevention and removal are essential for good dental health.
Good oral hygiene and dental health require careful attention to the details of brushing and flossing.
What Tools To Use:
Dentists recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste.
How To Brush:
Your dentist can provide specific instructions on the brushing techniques that are best for you. Generally, brush the teeth in short round or elliptical strokes, one or two teeth at a time, making sure to cover all the surfaces of each tooth – the inside, outside and chewing surface. Use only moderate pressure, as too much pressure can harm both gums and tooth enamel. Spend three to four minutes brushing at least three times per day.
How To Floss:
Thorough flossing is every bit as important as good brushing habits. To floss draw the dental floss straight between pair of teeth, pulling it lightly against the tooth on each side in turn to form a 'C' shape, and work it up and down three or four times. Plan on flossing at least once per day for three to four minutes.
